Is Market Research Important for a Business?

When we enter into a new business or a new product in an existing business, motivation and the energy levels would be at their peak. But as the time passes both the motivation and the energy levels come down to ground level. The reason is you have invested lot of money and time in the product and developed the ultimate product in the market. But, at the end there are no sales or very less sales than your expectation.

Finally you may land up with huge losses and start thinking why the hell you have started this business?

The ultimate result of the entire process would be, you may close this product and start another new product following the same process again.

For example, I got an idea to make MS-Office Suite tutorial teaching how to use MS-Office software. Since MS-Office is such a product which will be used in most of the offices, my assumption is, this product would be of high demand in the market. Then I will try to find out who are the competitors for this product and at what price this product is being sold.

Then the team is place to develop the product. The website is ready with all the online purchasing options and the product is ready for sale.

When it comes to marketing the product, the first thing which anyone would do is, if they have an opt-in list, campaigns will be sent to the list, informing them about the product. After waiting for few months when not much sales are made, either the product will be tied-up with other product/business and get a share on each sale or just drop the product.

Though there is huge requirement for your product and lots of users are using your product. But still why are you not able to sell the product? The answer is very simple;

  • You have not done enough Market Research Analysis,
  • You didn’t identify your customers,
  • You didn’t satisfy/address your customer’s needs.

Though these things are hurting, you need to accept the reality.

Market Research is one of the important factors for a business to become successful.

Most of us ignore Market Research for their business and give more focus on developing the product. It is not that you don’t know the importance of Market Research but it is because you don’t have the information about the simple formulas on how to do Market Research? Which Marketing Research Tool to be used, etc;

If I ask you a simple question, who is your target customers/audience? The answer you may get is either I don’t know or the entire world is my target audience.

After reading this blog definitely you will try to find out who is your target audience. And the next step you would perform is, open a search engine and type what???

Yes, first time when I tried to answer this question, I too found it very difficult. “I don’t know where to start and where to end“. Market Research is bit boring because you need to question yourself and you yourself have to find the answer for it. To make this process simple, I made a step by step process which will help you to find the answer. You just need to follow those steps and you will get answers for your questions.

To conclude, I will be covering all the important aspects of Marketing Research on which I did lot of R&D to find out what works and what doesn’t really work. These aspects helped me develop my business and make huge sales for my product. I can assure that if you follow this tutorial you can sell a product which has ZERO DEMAND in the market and that too at higher cost.

    Hi Syed, foudn your article on Linked in…

    I agree we all want to get started with the business prior to finding out if there is a market for it.

    i have learnt a lesson recently where i did research my market, and actively still receive feedback but still not biters for my product.

    i was at first convinced based on stats research that my business was a winner but now i am struggling to see what i did wrong. In hindsight i am continuing to poll my current and growing database as to what they really wanted in the first place.

    Hi Charl,

    Thanks for sharing your experience. I saw many guys who started a business without any focus and closed it very quickly.

    In my tutorial I have made a step-by-step method to do Market Research. To make this subject I went through a MBA course to learn how to understand market. Very soon it will be available on winwinmantra.

    Regards
    Hyder

    I absolutely agree. Market research is the essential to the future of a business. Not doing sound market research is like taking a dive into water without knowing how deep it is.

  4. Nice article. I really think that research is important!
